MEDIUM VELOCITY WATER SPRAY SYSTEM

A Medium Velocity Water Spray (MVWS) System is a fixed fire protection system designed to control, suppress, or extinguish fires involving flammable liquids, transformers, cable galleries, loading racks, LPG installations, and other industrial hazards by discharging water in the form of medium velocity spray droplets through specially designed nozzles. The system operates at moderate pressure and produces water droplets of controlled size and velocity to achieve cooling, flame knockdown, vapor dispersion, and exposure protection. It generally consists of a dedicated water storage source, fire pumps, piping network, deluge valve assembly, spray nozzles, detection and actuation system, isolation valves, and control instrumentation. Upon activation—either automatically through heat/flame detectors or manually through remote release stations—the deluge valve opens, allowing water to flow simultaneously through all open spray nozzles covering the protected hazard area. The spray pattern is hydraulically designed in accordance with standards such as National Fire Protection Association NFPA 15 to ensure adequate density, discharge angle, and complete surface coverage of the equipment being protected. Medium velocity spray systems are particularly effective for cooling exposed surfaces to prevent escalation, reducing radiant heat, and minimizing the risk of explosion or fire spread in high-risk industrial facilities such as power plants, refineries, petrochemical units, and transformer yards.
