HIGH PRESSURE CO2 AUTOMATIC FIRE EXTINGUISHING SYSTEM

A high-pressure CO₂ automatic fire extinguishing system is a total flooding or local application fire protection solution designed to rapidly suppress fires by displacing oxygen and interrupting the combustion process. The system stores carbon dioxide in seamless steel cylinders at high pressure (typically around 50–60 bar at ambient temperature), fitted with valve assemblies, discharge heads, and safety devices. Upon fire detection—through heat, smoke, or flame detectors integrated with a control panel—the system activates automatically (or manually via pull stations), releasing CO₂ through a network of high-pressure piping and calibrated discharge nozzles. The gas is discharged in a calculated concentration (generally 34% to 65% depending on hazard classification) to reduce oxygen levels below that required to sustain combustion. The system includes essential components such as a detection and control unit, cylinder bank with manifold, pilot cylinders for actuation, time delay mechanisms, alarms, and ventilation shutdown interlocks to ensure effective flooding and personnel safety. High-pressure CO₂ systems are particularly suitable for enclosed spaces like electrical rooms, server rooms, turbine enclosures, and flammable liquid storage areas, as they leave no residue and do not damage sensitive equipment. Proper design adheres to standards such as NFPA 12, ensuring correct concentration, discharge time (typically within 60 seconds), and safety provisions including warning alarms and evacuation delays to prevent asphyxiation risks.
