A 'CO₂ (Carbon Dioxide) Fire Suppression System' is a fixed fire protection system designed to extinguish fires by reducing the oxygen concentration in a protected area to a level that will not support combustion. The system stores liquid carbon dioxide in high-pressure cylinders or low-pressure refrigerated tanks and, upon activation, rapidly discharges the gas through a network of pipes and nozzles into the hazard area. CO₂ suppresses fire primarily through oxygen displacement and secondarily through cooling as the liquid expands into gas. The design and installation of CO₂ systems are governed by standards such as National Fire Protection Association 'NFPA 12 (Standard on Carbon Dioxide Extinguishing Systems)', which specifies requirements for system design, concentration levels, discharge times, and safety measures. Because high concentrations of CO₂ can be hazardous to human life, these systems require clear warning signage, pre-discharge alarms, emergency shutdown procedures, and restricted access controls to ensure occupant safety during operation.
